Should The Players ever officially become golf's fifth major?

This week's Players Championship has long been considered the fifth unofficial major of golf. He owns each year one of the strongest pitches of the PGA Tour according to the world rankings, and has a long list of elite winners.

The stadium golf comes alive every year at TPC Sawgrass, where hundreds of fans line up the 17th green par-3 of the island hoping to imbue the drama.

This week's Players Championship has long been considered the fifth unofficial major of golf. He owns each year one of the strongest pitches of the PGA Tour according to the world rankings, and has a long list of elite winners.

But can he officially become a major? Should that be?
Programming was a problem for the players. For a long time, the event was organized in March as a kind of metal that wakes up in the new season before the Masters. But his move to May caused challenges with TPC Sawgrass.

With warmer and drier temperatures in Florida during the month of May, the course began to look a little browner than green. Although it had nothing to do with the tournament's ability to be considered major, its identity was probably affected by being displaced.

Starting in 2019, players will return in March, which will give them a more comfortable place in the calendar. The PGA Championship will run from August to May, giving rise to the main events of the month of March from the FedEx Cup playoffs in August.

Part of the gamblers problem is his identity crisis. Yes, it's held in the same place every year, but not everyone is a fan of it. There is only one master and only one National Augusta. However, TPC Sawgrass has become almost as iconic as Augusta, and The Players certainly has a major championship side.

"The players' championship has grown since we moved in May 2007 and, no matter the date, is clearly one of the best golf events – the best players in the world , a must-see venue in The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, "said Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, in a statement.

"Players moving to March 2019 will enhance an already flourishing part of our Florida calendar and play an important role in an overall improved schedule."

The solid ground, the stature of the event and the support of the players are all in favor of the tournament to formally make it a major championship, but challenges remain.

Logically, making players a major would be a nightmare. In the last 16 years, 16 different players have won, with Tiger Woods the only player to have won twice since 2000.

Would all these players suddenly have a major championship on their resume? This does not seem entirely correct. They were not playing for a major championship at the time of their victory, so this might underestimate the achievement of the big winners.

If the winners of the previous players did not get a major for their achievement, how could the next wave of winners be crowned major champion for winning the same event? Guys like Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar – considered to be two of the best golfers to have ever won major – would make an upset in their career if they received a prize for their previous efforts.

Subsequently, they would probably feel very uncomfortable if others were to be crowned major champions for winning The Players, while they remained without a majority.

"I have the impression that I view this event as a major," Fowler told reporters of TPC Sawgrass, via cnn.com . "It has the major meaning, obviously one of the best courses we play all year, on a challenging golf course."

In addition, Jack Nicklaus won the event three times, and Woods won twice. Nicklaus would have suddenly 21 major championship wins, while Woods would have 16. The major status of Granting The Players would rewrite history, which would be difficult.

While players can walk, talk and look like a major championship, it will probably never be – officially. Golf has always had four major tournaments, and although the PGA Championship sometimes struggles with its own identity, it's the sport's fourth major, leaving no room for The Players.

TPC Sawgrass is a super course, the players are very proud to conquer to win, but make the major players is ultimately too complicated.
